Abstract:
This dataset identifies stream reaches that are confirmed or potential migration pathways, spawning grounds, or nursery areas for anadromous fish. The species included in this assessment are alewife, blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis), American shad (A. sapidissima), hickory shad (A. mediocris), striped bass (Morone americana), and some populations of yellow perch (Perca flavescens). Certain time-of-year restrictions apply to areas used by anadromous fish. Data associated with each reach include stream name, reach length, status (confirmed or potential), species confirmed in the reach (if confirmed), watershed, and upstream boundary. Upstream boundaries were established at impediments or where habitat became unsuitable.
Purpose:
Stocks of anadromous fish have declined dramatically in recent decades. Many efforts are underway to conserve and to restore these species. This dataset is intended as a tool to assist in those efforts and in land use planning.

Point collections for anadromous fish from VDGIF Collections and Fisheries Division databases were displayed with the USEPA Reach Files (v. 3). Collections that met certain criteria were used to identify and to select confirmed reaches. These reaches were then attributed with information about collected fish species. Potential reaches were added from the USEPA reach files. Stream names were checked using USGS 1:24K DRG topographic maps. VDGIF collections and Fisheries Division datasets were spatially attributed using a range of methods, however, most were assigned coordinates based on 1:24K USGS topographic maps. Upstream boundaries of reaches were determined using the VDGIF impediments dataset and USGS 1:24K DRG topographic maps.
